Huawei Launches P30 Smartphone, Revenue Hits $100M
On Tuesday, China-based Huawei launched a new smartphone, challenging the two most notorious rivals – Apple and Samsung. The company claims that its P30 version has a high-end camera in line with the highest standards while the more sophisticated version – P30 Pro – incorporates a quad-camera developed in collaboration with German company Leica.
Huawei P30 Features
The quad camera integrates a main 40 mp lens, a wide-angle lens, a telephoto lens that can provide 50x digital zoom, and a “time-of-flight” feature that can build a 3D map based on the infrared rays (for a blurred effect especially in the background). This is a more advanced camera than the triple system found on P20 Pro, launched in 2018.
Besides, the P30 series comes with a new feature called dual-view video, which enables users to have the two cameras film simultaneously. For example, the user can zoom a part of the scene on one half of the screen while displaying a wide-angle view of the scene on the other.
The good news is that the P30 phone is cheaper than the Mate X version. Reuters found out that P30 will start at 799 euro while the Pro version will be available for 999 euro.
Peter Gauden, a senior marketing manager at the company’s consumer business, told the media that the newly launched products would “completely rewrite the rules of smartphone photography.”
When asked how the P30 model was performing in comparison to iPhones and Samsung products, he said:
We're expecting again to surpass what we did last year and nobody is catching up with what we did last year.
The P30 Pro has a 6.47-inch display while the P30 version has a 6.1-inch screen. The smartphones integrate the in-screen fingerprint sensor as in Mate 20. The phone has an artificial intelligence chipset (Kirin 980 built by Huawei).
Huawei Announced Smart Glasses
At the launch of Huawei P30 series, the company said that it had partnered with Korean fashion brand Gentle Monster to develop its first smart glasses. Gentle Monster is a popular Asian brand for luxury eyewear. Interestingly, Huawei’s glasses won’t integrate any cameras, which will make them look like normal sunglasses.
Buyers will be able to use the glasses to answer calls via the dual mics and speakers and turn on the voice assistant. The glasses, which are dust and water resistant, can be charged wirelessly.
Huawei expects to launch the product in June or July of this year, and no price has been disclosed so far.
Huawei Hits $100M in Revenue For The First Time
On Friday, Huawei announced that in 2018 it had recorded a revenue of 721.2 billion Yuan, which is the equivalent of $107.13 billion. This is a 19.5% year-on-year increase that surprised everyone, as the surge comes amid the political pressure on Huawei coming from the US, which related to the 5G controversies.
Net profit for the year hit 59.3 billion Yuan, up 25.1% compared to the previous year. Thus, the sales growth was faster than the figures in 2017 while the growth of the net profit rise was a bit slower.
Huawei is the largest telecommunication equipment maker in the world, and its smartphone brand is growing faster than Samsung and Apple. However, the company is challenged by high pressure from Western countries on worries related to the security of its devices used in 5G networks.
The US, along with Australia and New Zealand, has banned all domestic companies from using Huawei to offer the technology for their 5G networks.
